The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux.
Founded in 2007, the LF sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and is supported by leading Linux and open source companies and developers from around the world. The Linux Foundation promotes, protects and standardizes Linux by providing unified resources and services needed for open source to successfully compete with closed platforms. The open source model has transformed software development by providing faster demand-side learning, higher quality, better security, shorter development cycles, and lower prices than closed platform development models.
For Linux to remain open and attain the greatest ubiquity possible, important services must be provided, including legal protection, standardization, promotion and collaboration. The Linux Foundation has been founded to help close the gap between open source and proprietary platforms, while sustaining the openness, freedom of choice and technical superiority inherent in open source software.

Founded in June 2004 by 8 mobile operators, the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) was set up with the aim of simplifying the customer experience of mobile data services and improving mobile device security. Despite its operator roots, OMTP has grown to serve the industry as a whole, and now draws its membership and sponsors from some 35 companies. The complete mobile value chain is represented and as well as operators includes handset manufacturers, chip makers, content providers, and software and OS developers.
GNOME is a community driven project which provides two things: the GNOME Desktop Environment, an intuitive graphical user interface with a set of free software applications and utilities, and the GNOME development platform, a comprehensive collection of libraries allowing the easy creation of new applications to the GNOME environment. The GNOME Mobile initiative, started in 2006, brings these high-quality platform components to mobile and hand-held platforms. GNOME Mobile has been successfully deployed on a wide range of handheld devices.
